-The Alberta government will loan $100 million to Alberta
municipalities interest-free. However, since this is not money
issued interest-free by the Bank of Canada, the taxpayer will
still be paying for the interest.
- The Edmonton team received confirmation from
the City of Edmonton financial department that a request has
been sent to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to investigate
the concept of interest-free loans for municipal infrastructure.
- The Federation of Canadian Municipalities passed
both the Squamish, BC and Kingston, Ontario resolutions calling
for interest-free loans for municipal infrastructure.
- The Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference
ended with the participants calling on the provincial and federal
governments to come up with "innovative" solutions to a probable
upcoming municipal funding crisis.
